Essay On Transgenic Technology

883 Words4 Pages
There are numerous potential applications of transgenic technology to develop novel and improved strains of livestock. Practical applications of transgenics include to improve the characteristics of farm animals (e.g. fast growth, disease resistance), to obtain high value products (recombinant pharmaceutical proteins and food supplements useful for human health), to mimic human diseases like artherosclerosis, diabetes etc. and to obtain organs for xenotransplantaion. 1. Medical Applications: a) Pharmaceuticals production: Transgenic animals are being produced that express pharmaceuticals in their milk, egg white, blood, urine, seminal plasma and silk worm cocoon using tissue specific promoter for treatment of human diseases. This is for economic reasons as it's believed that far greater quantities of a…show more content…
So, transgenic pigs containing phytase-encoding gene have been generated which allows the pigs to digest plant phytate and fecal phosphorus output was reduced up to 75%. These pigs are known as eco-friendly transgenic pigs. Above examples demonstrate that transgenic animal technologies are highly promising in terms of proteins production at a very low cost, producing animal disease models, creating disease resistant animals, producing transgenic animals for organ transplanation and finally enhancing milk and meat quality. Conclusion: Genetically modified animals will play a significant role in coming years in the biomedical area, particularly via the production of biomedically important pharmaceutical proteins, disease resistant animals, animal models and the supply of xenografts. But, there are safety concerns for the production of transgenic animals, for example, inserted transgenes may affect the host, contaminate other genes, transmit pathogens from animals to humans and produce a variety of threats to ecological balance and species
