In order for a patient to be diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder the they must not have experienced a full-on manic episode. The patient must also have had at least one episode of hypomania and major depression with no bouts of full mania. The frequencies of depression tend to be numerous, leading to less days when the patient feels well. Bipolar II disorder is also closely associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Postpartum depression is experienced after the birth of a child. Unlike the mild feeling of depression that can occur for a short period after a child’s birth, postpartum depression will continue to pervade and disrupt a patient’s life, causing a feeling of disinterest and extreme sadness. Clinical depression is diagnosed when these feelings continue for a prolonged period of time. A patient diagnosed with schizophrenia may hear voices speaking to them so that interacting with others is interrupted with spasms as they try to hear what is to them, demands in a crowded room. Maintaining relationships is difficult as they often suffer from phobias in which they become obsessed. An untreated schizophrenic patient displays unpredictable behavior, and can seem very disjointed. Clinical depression’s symptoms include pervasive sadness, low moods, irritability, and suicidal thoughts. A depressed patient may turn to suicide as an escape from these symptoms, believing they will never be well again. Alcohol use disorder and depression often go hand-in-hand.
