“The game of volleyball, originally called “mintonette,” was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan after the invention of basketball only four years before.” (“This was How Volleyball Was Introduced”). Every child and their siblings or friends have made up a game at some point in their childhood. It could be a game that continuously had rules added and adjusted as time went on. This is exactly how the wonderful sport of volleyball came about. It was a great combination of several different sports. Over the years the rules, regulations, and the popularity of volleyball have grown and changed into what it is today. Not only have the rules, regulations, and popularity changed but also the main fundamentals. From the mere pass to now many different plays, volleyball is almost nothing like it was in 1895. There are three main things that you need to know to be a good volleyball player, passing, setting, and attacking. Passing is the most important skill needed to have a successful team. Without a good pass it can greatly limit a teams’ ability to earn their points. As with setting, it’s highly helpful to have a setter that knows what they’re doing and also has that connection with their attackers. It’s one thing to be a good setter, but to know and connect with each attacker can take things to a whole new level. Lastly, to have solid footwork and a hard, smart attacker is a game changer. Anyone can hit a ball but it’s important to have smart attackers who can see the court and make changes. With every given position in volleyball it’s always important to be a smart player. Adapting and overcoming can make the biggest difference on and off the court. Every position has different demands, that’s why certain people are placed where they are.
