Nationalism is a group of people that are united by something and show it somehow. Canada is ruled by one government forcing people to follow what is set in place no matter the risks, as seen in source one. The image in this source shows one man leading a group of men off a cliff that seems unstable. This man is holding a large flag that states “nationalism” showing that he believes that there should be one cohesive population; that to have nationalism you need to believe in the same end goal. There are a line of men that all look and walk alike, the source makes it look as if these men are following their leader blindly off the cliff. There is also a smaller flag beneath the larger flag in place of the nation or county that he is representing. This man is essentially driving these people off the side off the cliff and neglecting all the other groups that are different from himself.…show more content…
Mr. Renan explains that there are two things that link us together to form a nation, the past and the present. He believes that people that share a common past will stick together to form a common future. Mr. Renan fails to realize that not all the people of that nation will share the commonality of their past. In the nation of Canada there are many different sub-nations that have formed in different time periods. There is the First Nations that “claimed” Canada first, but were overpowered and lost all rights to the land. Because of this the First Nations became unified in their past experiences and will become stronger in the future because of it. The English and the French have different sub-nations because they have diverse pasts also. The English came in and dominated “Canada” but the French had to fight to keep their language and population alive.
