Chet Bennett Keisha Simmons 2 March 2015 The History of the jury systems It is understood that the jury is an extremely important part to the judicial system today. The jury is able to help the judge on the ruling by using their common sense and involvement in the case. That has not always been the case though. During certain portions of time in history there was no such thing as a jury and the rulings of cases were decided usually by what a king believed to be the correct ruling, which wasn’t always a just decision. The jury would then tell the king what they saw and their evidence, but only the king or his reverends made the decision whether the accused was guilty or not. During the next two centuries, English juries had changed to not only advise in cases, but to actually decide what were facts. At the end of the 15th century, the jury system become look upon as the most appreciated piece of English common law. The courts then began to allow parties to reject to certain persons being seated on a jury, mostly because they were nemeses to one another. It was in the late 17th century that a jury was able to return a verdict of not guilty and not be in fear of incarceration or hefty fines for themselves. The jury system in the United States became extremely important after the Revolutionary War. Not only did the right to trial by jury help to make for a more fair trial, it also noted overthrowing the king himself and breaking away from his tyranny. If not for our use of the jury the idea of equal justice would probably have never come to fruition. The jury system help to combine the rules of law with the common sense of the everyday person.
