Ella Baker once said, “Give light and people will find the way.” and because I believe in this statement, it caused me to choose this person to research for my project. Ella Baker was a civil rights and human rights activist who fought for many generations against poverty, racism, and injustice; she was considered as one of the powerful behind the scenes person in respect to activism. Basically, she was one of the many heroes of the civil rights Freedom Movement who inspired and guided many future leaders. Ella Baker played a key role in some of the organizations that influenced some of our major civil rights activities, and one of them include the NAACP, in which she became the national director. Ella Josephine Baker was born on December 13, 1903, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Georgiana and Blake Baker. The way Baker viewed human and civil rights were founded while she was a kid, where she shared in activities that built a strong sense of community in her character. Baker was pretty close to her grandmother, who was a former slave and from her, Baker learned many stories about her slave experience. Baker’s mother wanted her to become a schoolteacher, but Ella had different goals. She was a very brilliant student who attended Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Some of her later achievements included in New York City were her service on the Puerto Rican Solidarity Committee board. She founded and was the president of the Fund for Education and Legal Defense. Some activities in which she took part or sponsored were the National United Committee to Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners, consultant of both the Commissions for Social and Racial Justice of the Episcopal Church and the Execution Council, and a member of the Charter Group for a Pledge of Conscience and the Coalition of Concerned Black
