Specific Purpose: To motivate my audience to take the End Distracted Driving Pledge. I. Attention Did you know that April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month? Are you aware that distracted driving is a serious problem in the U.S. and that its effect is just a detrimental as drinking and driving and the outcome is the same injury and death? According to the 2014 National Occupant Protection Use Survey (NOPUS) conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, at any given moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers use cell phones or manipulate electronic devices while driving. Reiterate to your teen driver that there could be serious consequences for violating these laws - including a delayed or suspended license. Adults talking or texting while driving who get caught end up with fines, higher insurance rates, points on their licenses and depending on the number of times caught can have their license suspended. • Everyone should become more informed of the dangers of distracted driving. While some people still do not know how dangerous distracted driving has become, others know about the risks of texting and talking while driving but still choose to do so anyway. V. Action A. Most people are aware of the dangers of trying to multitask while driving but most continue to do it anyway. They make the mistake of thinking the statistics do not apply to them, and that they can defy the odds. Therefore, it is up to parents to keep your family safe and informed. B.
