Deferred dreams are dreams that were put off and never really achieved. These dreams could be as small as wanting to order soup instead of salad, or as big as not pursuing what you want, and hating your life because of it. Mrs. Gibbs in the play ‘Our Town’ by Thornton Wilder has a dream deferred, that she calls the dream of her life. Mrs. Gibbs’ dream is to have her husband, Dr. Gibbs, go on vacation and relax from his high stress job. Mrs. Gibbs talks to her friend Mrs. Webb and brought up her dream, “Well, if I could get the Doctor to take the money and go away someplace on a real trip … it's been the dream of my life to see Paris, France. Gibbs’ dream goes forever on hold, as later found out, she dies and never sees the realization of this dream. This dream is deferred because she can achieve it, but decides to put it off and do other things. She called this dream the her dream of her life, to leave the USA and have her husband take a vacation. Many people have the dream of traveling and exploring the world, but sadly like Mrs. Gibbs, this dream almost never comes true for a overwhelming majority. Similar to Mrs. Gibbs’ dream, the dream of Mama from ‘A Raisin in the Sun’, by Lorraine Hansberry, was deferred. Mama had a dream of buying a new house while her husband was still alive was deferred for most of her life. “Hadn't been married but two weeks and wasn't planning on living here no more than a year. (She shakes her head at the dissolved dream.) We was going to set away, little by little, don't you know, and buy a little place out in Morgan Park … you should know all the dreams I had 'bout buying that house and fixing it up and making me a little garden in the back— (She waits and stops smiling.) And didn't none of it happen” (Hansberry 502).
