The American Dream is considered as the ultimate goal and success in life, but chasing it at any cost can be risky. In this novel The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald , The American Dream cannot always create a pathway to success, it can lead to corruption, loss of morals and even death. Therefore, these points should be carefully considered when obtaining the American Dream. These negative events can happen if the dream is pursued at any cost resulting the corruption of the dream. First of all, it takes a lot of hard work and sacrifices to aquire The American Dream. With the use of the white card, it shows that Gatsby is above the law, due to the officer apologizing and not giving him a ticket after he was speeding to get to the party. This is a good example of corruption due to the fact that Gatsby was doing illegal business with the commisioner, making him gain so much power after receiving “Christmas Cards” from the commisioner and shows that Gatsby is cheating his way to The American Dream from making these deals with the commisioner who has much higher power than him. Another example that shows these illegal actions can lead to corruption of The American Dream is when Nick Carraway asks Gatsby a question about his previous business’ that he had before to earn so much money, he confesses: “Oh, I’ve been in several things,” he corrected himself. “I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business. But I’m not in either one right now” (Fitzgerald, 96). This shows that Gatsby is cheating his way to make so much wealth and money by getting involved in illegal business’ which is a corruption of The American Dream. The reason why this is a negative aspect is because even if he is finding shortcuts to gain so much wealth, he is corrupting himself and society and finding shortcuts without the police knowing what business he is doing. Therefore, this shows that Gatsby is corrupting his American Dream since he is making money and wealth as quick as possible by doing bussiness with people that have much higher power than him such as the commisioner and
