One theme that caught my eye in the short story “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” is that corruption can destroy people. Mr.Shifflet is deceiving Mrs. Carter into marrying her imbecile daughter and giving him the car in order to make a deal. Mrs.Carter makes an effort to have a man around her house using the car to get Mr.Shifflet tied down by marrying her daughter and doing so her actions are corrupt. The result of this corruption is that Mrs. Carter has nobody to help her at the farm, no car for leverage or bargaining power, is left all by herself and no daughter to provided her companionship.
