My adrenaline pumping, using the last bit of air in my lungs, I push to the very end to strike my final pose. The crowd cheers and tears stream down my face as I feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment. In this moment winning or losing does not matter. Time stands still as I reflect on the many hours of practice, frustrations, laughs, friends and family that got me here. This is the best feeling in the world, this is my life; this is color guard. I have been in color guard and winter guard for seven years, serving as team captain for two years. This activity is such a big part of me and I could not imagine my life without it. It has not always been easy, but it has definitely been worth it. One of my favorite quotes provides a perfect description: “To those who understand it, no explanation needed, to those who do not, no explanation possible”. It is hard to express how this activity truly affects me, unless you understand the hard work and dedication. I am extremely passionate about this activity. The feeling of performing in front of a crowd, whether it is twenty or five hundred takes me to another place. For those five to seven minutes nothing else matters. This is not a team, it is a sisterhood. I have bonded with so many different people that I may have never met without this activity. Our staff, parents, and crew provide such an amazing support system. Together we travel across the state for competitions every weekend. Our parents have been transformed into guard moms and guard dads. They are not there to support one child; they are there to support all. The bus driver does not only get us there and back safely, he is our biggest fan. I have met so many friends and even parents from other schools.
