“The Open Boat” by Stephen Crane is a perfect example of naturalist writing. Naturalist writing has a lot of elements that play key roles in a story. In The Open Boat, four men are in a tiny boat trapped at sea. Each man has a specific job that helps lead them back to the coast over the period of the story. The Open Boat is a naturalist piece of writing because there is a force beyond their control, an indifferent power of nature, and it includes “survival of the fittest”.
