Colon cancer is a cancer that is in the patient’s colon or rectum. Once someone has the cancer the growth on the stomach will continue to grow until it makes it impossible for anything to pass thru. Depending on how large the cancer growth is determines the likelihood of survival of the patient. There are three main risk factors that are associated with the development and growth of colon cancer; age, diet and family history. Colon cancer can occur in teenagers and young adults but it is seen more prominently in individuals over fifty years old. Men are at more risk than women when it comes to being diagnosed with colon cancer. Diet plays a key factor in the growth of colon cancer. Adenocarcinoma is the most popular form of colorectal polyps. It accounts for 95% of colon and rectal cancers. The two main types of adenocarcinomas are mucinous adenocarcinoma and signet ring cell adenocarcinoma. There are five different screening options to check whether you have colon cancer: stool blood test, flexible sigmoidoscopy, barium enema, colonoscopy and virtual colonoscopy. Stage 0 is where the cancer is found only in the innermost lining of the rectum or colon. The patient has the best rate for survival at this stage. This is why colonoscopies are such an important procedure after the age of 40. In stage, I the cancer has not spread beyond the inner wall of the rectum or colon. With each stage the survival rate becomes less and less. During stage II, The cancer has spread into the muscle layer of the rectum or colon. By stage III, the cancer has spread to at least one lymph node in the area. Stage IV is the final stage of this cancer. At this point, the cancer has spread to distant sites in the body, such as the bones, liver, or lungs. This stage is dependent on how far the tumor has penetrated or if the cancer has spread to lymph nodes near the tumor. The survival rate is under 10% so you better have your affaires in order and party like there is no tomorrow!
