Beginning with the Gold Rush in 1848 and 1849, migration to the west coast of the United States boomed during the middle of the nineteenth century. The United States grew in size and power and due to a relaxed immigration policy, immigrants came from around the world to advance the rapid economical development. The Chinese brought to California a strong labor force; they were essential in the completion of the transcontinental railroad as well as panning for gold. However, as the years progressed, whites saw the Chinese as a threat to their way of life and began to pass legislation to exclude the Chinese from California.
