316 Words2 Pages
As George and Slim engage in a conversation, Slim brings up the topic of how George and Lennie always travel together and how rare it was during the 1930’s. Lennie has a mental disability, but he has an enormous amount of strength compared to normal men. George, on the other hand, is smaller, smarter, and more clever, but like Lennie, is very hardworking. Slim questions George about why a “cuckoo” like Lennie and a “smart little guy” like George travel together. George is quick to defend Lennie and explains how he wouldn’t be “buckin’ barley” if he was so intelligent. Loneliness is a theme that Steinbeck uses to emphasize how lucky Lennie and George are to have each other. Slim explains to George how “none of the guys ever travel together”
