Have you ever been in a situation that changes your life forever? In The Outsiders, author S.E. Hinton tells the story of gang life in Tulsa ,OK in the 1960s. The gang is like a family, and each of the characters encounter situations that change their lives in different ways. By showing us how each character is affected by an event, she shows us that nothing, especially that which is perfect and beautiful, can last forever. Darry has to grow up too fast and leaves his childhood, Johnny’s loyalty for his gang costs him his life, and Sodapop discovers that his love is one-sided. They all show how different kinds of good, perfect, and beautiful things that cannot last forever. Darry, the older brother of the narrator Ponyboy, gives up his childhood too early and with it being carefree, playing football, and going to college., When he was 16 his parents died and he had to take care of his two younger brothers, Sodapop and Ponyboy. Soda is tall and, skinny, he has long brown hair, and beautiful green eyes. He is a greaser but is always so nice, silly, and happy. Ever since his parents died, he dropped out of high school, and got a job at a gas station. He wants to get married to his girlfriend Sandy, who he discovers doesn’t love him as much as he thought. Darry and Ponyboy were fighting in their home and they tried to get Soda to pick sides and Soda broke down crying and ran out the door and he dropped the letter that he tried to send Sandy who was all the way in Florida with her grandma. Dally says to Ponyboy: “When Sandy went to Florida… it wasn’t Soda, Ponyboy. He told me he loved her, but I guess she didn’t love him like he thought she did,”.Sodapop’s happiness about the beautiful thing that he had with Sandy comes to an end when he realizes she doesn’t love
