"Yesterday, December 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." (Gallagher) It was the United States naval base in the Hawaiian territory. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor had several substantial impacts on the United States such as allowing the country to declare war on Japan, shaping the U.S. into a world power, and forcing the Japanese-Americans into relocation camps. The attack on Pearl Harbor led to the United States declaring war on Japan. It killed more than 2,400 Americans, damaged eight battleships, and destroyed more than 100 planes. The Japanese air squadrons bomved the American Island of Oahu while the naval base in Hawaii was attacked by torpedos and bomber planes. The attack was planned to destroy the United States Pacific Fleet to gain access to the oil fields in Java. The Roosevelt administration began a series of actions against Japan. In 1940 and 1941 the United Stated increased economic sanctions against Japan causing them to break off diplomatic relations with the U.S. The military then moved the Pacific fleet from San Diego to Pearl Harbor and set up a long base bombers close to Japan. It put the American people into full war effort. They devoted all time and supplies towards the war and submitted themselves to government rationing and price controls. Millions of workers moved from low to high productivity jobs in the industry. Production of most goods were banned and only products needed for the war were made. Millions of students, retirees, housewives, and unemployed moved into the labor force. Four years with full American impact led to the Allied Powers winning the war.
