Have you ever heard of Bonnie and Clyde? Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were two of America’s most notorious criminals. Their two year crime-spree, which involved armed robbery, car theft, abduction, murder and a series of dramatic gun battles across at least eleven states, lasted from 1932 to 1934 during the Great Depression. Bonnie Parker was born October 1, 1910 in Rowena, Texas to Henry and Emma Parker. The family lived off of Henry Parker’s job as a bricklayer, but when he died suddenly in 1914, Emma Parker moved the family to Cement City. Bonnie was beautiful. She was 4’11”, did well in school and loved writing poetry (she wrote two poems while on the run that helped make her famous). At the age of sixteen she got bored with her life, so she dropped out of school and married Roy Thornton. The marriage wasn’t a good one. By 1927, Roy began spending time away from home and two years later he was sentenced to five years in prison for robbery. Bonnie worked as a waitress, but was out of a job just as the Great Depression was getting started. Bonnie and Roy never divorced.…show more content…
Clyde’s parents were tenant farmers, someone that farms on rented land, and sometimes they didn’t make enough money to feed their children. Usually, Clyde was sent to live with other relatives during the rough times. When he was twelve, his parents quit being tenant farmers and moved to West Dallas, where Henry opened a gas station. West Dallas was a dangerous neighborhood at the time, but Clyde fit right in. He was 5’7” and only had two serious girlfriends, Anne and Gladys, before he met Bonnie. Clyde never married.
