Did you know that the dictionary is actually banned from some schools and public libraries? Many books have been banned or challenged throughout the years, including many children’s books. Books are banned for a variety of reasons. Books should never be banned or challenged; reading a variety of books keeps our mind open to the viewpoints of others. Banned Books Week was founded in 1982. The founder was a librarian named Judith Krug. Banned Books Week was created to generate awareness of book banning, the authors whose books were banned or challenged, and to celebrate the freedom to read.
