Founded in 1787, the electoral college has played the most immense part in electing both the President and Vice President of the United States. Since then, many have argued that this system is not fair nor an accurate representation of opinions in the United States. While many can agree with this statement, I do not. I believe that this system of voting is an effective way to elect both the President and Vice President of the United States. The electoral college is a body of people representing the states of the United States, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president. (dictionary.com) When the system was founded, the constitution gave each state a number of electors to the combined total of its membership in the Senate and its delegation in the House of Representatives. (history.com) The members of the electoral college are chosen by the states. This system of voting is used to elect both the President and the Vice President of the United States every four years on Election Day.…show more content…
Some complaints include, bigger states receive more attention and voters become discouraged. (occupytheory.com) The bigger states that hold more votes can alter who wins the election. Some states are known for only voting Democrat or Republican. These states are called “safe states.” Safe states cause certain candidates to pay less attention to smaller states and spend more time in the states that strictly vote Democrat or Republican. (occupytheory.com) This issue then leads into the second complaint: voters becoming discouraged. For many voters, the presidential elections are unfair. Since the electoral college determines whom the president and vice president may be, American voters become very discouraged due to the fact they feel their vote doesn’t count.
