A recent device labeled ‘Textalyzer’ has proven to decrease the amount of car crashes due to texting while driving by allowing police to determine if a person operating a vehicle used a cellphone. BACKGROUND: On one side, advocates claim that the Textalyzer will discourage texting and phone use by drivers. EVIDENCE: A 2015 AAA study announced that 58 percent of consequential teenage car crashes occured because of driver distraction. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving causes at least 1000 injuries and leaves 10 people dead everyday. EXPLAIN EVIDENCE: Proponents explain how the Textalyzer can potentially decrease the number of crashes because drivers will know that police have the ability to dictate smartphone usage. A license suspension will occur if a driver refuses the use of the Textalyzer. When Ben Lieberman’s son, Evan, passed away in a car crash seven years ago, Lieberman’s astonishment displayed when he realized that police never investigated the cellphone used by the driver in the crash.
