Are Many College Students Today Overly Digital Dependent? As a freshman at FGCU I consider myself to be very dependent on my electronics, whether it be my laptop or my iPhone. Considering that most of my school work is completed using my laptop, I have no idea what I would do if I were to lose it. I believe the reason that I am so dependent on technology is because I have invested a lot of my time perfecting my usage of it that they have become a part of me. Having said this, the amount of online courses available for college students is increasing significantly! This forces me to think that universities are not planning on fixing this problem, but are instead just furthering the requirement of student technology. The article “Online Course Enrollment Climbs for 10th Straight Year” by Kelsey Sheehy from U.S. News Education says that “more than 6.7 million students—32 percent of total higher Ed enrollment—took at least one online course through a university during fall 2011”. When I read this I realized that my assumptions were right about how many students take online courses, but I was shocked when I read that not that many colleges were offering online courses. “Schools appear to be responding to that demand, with 62.4 percent of the colleges surveyed”. I was shocked to see that only 62.4 percent of universities offered online courses in the United States. Considering how much technology is available to students I would have thought that many colleges would use these technological advances and offer more classes. Obviously the students who take these online courses are dependent on them to achieve their degrees, therefore adding to the percentages of people who use electronics.
