On Sunday June 28, 1914, the archduke of Austria, Francis Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie Ferdinand were fatally shot in Sarajevo, Bosnia. During their visit to Bosnia, whiles they were being driven along the parade route, a nineteen year-old Serbian named Gavrillo Princip, who was a member of the terrorist group, “Black Hand”, had shot and killed both the archduke and his wife with a pistol. Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria was heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary and his wife was Duchess of Hohenberg. After Bosnia and Herzegovina became under ruling of Austria-Hungary in 1908, many Slavs wanted to join Serbia and disliked the Austro-Hungarian supremacy, as did many Serbians, such as members of ‘Black Hand’ Gavrillo Princip.
