In the novella “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck we follow two grown men who look like they are really good friends. They travel together, eat together , work alongside each other, and are generally very close to each other. They are going to a ranch to find work and make money for a dream of theirs that they have thought out which is to own their own small farm which they could run however they want. George is a scrawny looking man who as you read the story realize is pretty much one of the only people that Lennie really listens to. They seem like they were finally going to achieve that dream when Lennie kills Curley's wife. This causes the men from the area to band together and try to kill Lennie all except George. The book never says the two hung out together however on page 40 during the conversation between Slim and George. George says to Slim “, Him and me both born in Auburn.”, and that George would always mess around with Lennie because of Lennie's mental deficiencies. However george did take advantage of that to the best of his creative capabilities such as making lennie jump into a river when he knew lennie couldn't swim but when george saw how much he put lennie through he knew that lennie had complete faith in george and that he wouldn't purposely try to cause him harm. After that incident George never tried to harm Lennie purposely anymore he there mostly trying to keep Lennie from harming himself and make sure he's taken care of. Examples are when he cooks dinner for lennie the day before they enter work and how he tells him not to mess with Curley's wife because ,’’ she’s a rat-trap if I ever seen one.,”(page…show more content…
Which I agree killing your best friend is not cool but you must put yourself through George’s perspective. You are a grown man with little to know money during the 20th centuries greatest economic disaster affecting continents over. You have to keep in mind Lennie wasn't normal and he was rather large. I think George knew even if they escaped again they would be hunted down. This time it was no small matter like it was back in weed lennie had killed someone which was a real crime. They couldn’t just get away scot free and with Lennie’s childlike mind he wouldn't be able to handle a life constantly on the
