At the end of the novel, why does Winston love Big Brother? Analyze his final reactions and compare this to his opinions on Big Brother as they occur throughout the text?
One's opinion could change drastically when their own values and beliefs are altered, or the introduction of new or even false information. In his book, “Unmoral Maxims” Abraham Miller writes, “Ten gods cannot change the opinion of one fool, especially if another fool agrees with him”
The idea that even a lie can seem like the truth is prevalent in George `Orwell’s “1984”, where citizens undergo brainwashing in order to believe in the party's propaganda. For example, to be “in love” with the mysterious or “make belief” figure known as Big Brother. On pages 282-287, Winston tells O'Brien that he hates Big Brother. O'Brien responds with the truth that, Winston must face in order to be released. That hate must be transformed into love and the love cannot be a fake. As O'Brien approaches, Winston can only think of shielding himself from the rats with the living body of another person. O'Brien brings them closer and closer. Suddenly Winston understands that there is one person in the world to whom he can transfer his punishment. He shouts frantically over and over, "Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don't care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me!"(1984, pg. 289). This scene showed Winston lose all hope of maintaining his individual spirit or his love for Julia. Asking Julia to take his own place shows how Winston gives in to Big Brother.
