A visual impairment occurs whenever a person’s visual system (i.e. their eyes or visual pathway in the brain) does not work properly due to a structural difference or trauma. Examples of visual impairments include, but are not limited to: • Myopia – also known as “nearsightedness” • Hyperopia – also known as “farsightedness” • Macular degeneration – referred to as “visual field loss” • Glaucoma – inability to see a full, 180 degree (i.e. diameter), visual field • Cortical vision impairment (CVI) Note: Should a person have one of the above diagnoses, it does not necessarily mean that he/she won’t be able to compensate, or are regarded as “disabled”. ________________________________________ What is 20/20 Vision? 20/20 vision is a widely-used
