Faulkner’s ideal writing style is a little different then most writers. He uses tragedy to produce hope for others. This idea is not used much, but it is a useful tactic for William Faulkner. If this idea is misused then the story turns into just a story. William Faulkner knows how to use this method, and uses it in a way that gets he or she to predict what will happen next. Although this doesn’t pertain to hopefulness, it helps to keep the reader stay engaged in the story. In result of this the reader understands how the narrator is using metaphors to portray the idea he is writing. Faulkner uses metaphors to develop his stories and ideals. He realizes how to use this in a uncomplicated way so that the reader doesn’t get confused when reading his work. In A Rose for Emily many things are used as metaphors one of the biggest ones are the house. Many don’t realize this because it isn’t straight forward when it talks about the house. This story slips things about the house in it. Only at the beginning is the house described. A college professor from the University of Mississippi talks about the house more in detail to the metaphor, “The house is a symbol of a time gone by, even as the neighborhood goes downhill. Emily has managed to live there with few questions asked, not even having to pay taxes” (Professor). This quote shows that in A Rose for Emily the house is one of the biggest metaphors, like I said before. It is a symbol of wealth in a way because of all the details, which then tells about the status of her father. The house could be described as anything, but this only one example of a metaphor. In many ways Emily herself is a metaphor. In the book, even though she stays inside and doesn’t talk to many people, the townspeople still see her as a lady and don’t want to harm her. Development of characters is important to any good story because it lets he or she like or dislike a character. It helps he or she feel for a character and know and empathize with what the character is going through. In many ways this is how the hopefulness is shown in A Rose for Emily. If he or she empathizes with a character then this is where the hopefulness comes into play. THey don’t want Emily to do any of this stuff. They are hopeful that she will pull through. When the townspeople would say, “Poor Emily behind the jalousies” this is when the empathy would come in to hope for a better life for her. His ideal is really present in the development of all his characters. He or she can feel for the characters because the narrator can show what they’re thinking, feeling, and saying. This helps toward the development of the character, but also to Faulkner’s ideal. A historian states that, “ Faulkner is hard to evade” (Historian). This helps many people realize how many people have read and analyzed his stories. Even if people don’t understand them they are still analyzing them so that they can see the hope identified in this. Character development is a tremendous help to those who are studying
