Langston Hughes on the African American Community
During a time in American History when African Americans did not have the rights to right to vote or the right of freedom of speech. Living a lot of different cities and staying with many family members, Langston Hughes had a pretty good understanding of poverty. Langston Hughes used poetry to speak to anyone who would listen. Langston Hughes is one of the most influential pioneers of African American literature and the Harlem renaissance era. Mr. Hughes dedicated his poems to the dreams, struggles, pride, and racial injustices of the African American community.
Langston Hughes's stories and poems deal with and serve as an outline of conditions that African Americans had to go through during the Depression Era.…show more content… In the story the men speak, one saying “Man, are you not hungry?” and the other man stated that he was because he missing the food that was being handed out by the charities. Throughout the story the two African American men showed anger at the white people because they had so much money and didn't even help the poor. "All of these here white people come up to Harlem spending forty or maybe even fifty bucks and they don't care about you and me or anyone else" (Why,You Reckon). Both of the protagonists decide to rob a white person so they can be rich, and stating that if they get caught they have nothing o lose. As soon as a white man is taken and robbed, one of the guys said "Wow, this was exciting." The guys start talk and agreed that they would be happy if they had money like a white man. one of the men said, "What do you think is the matter with rich white people? Why you think they are not happy?” The two guys men would be extremely happy if they just had the means of food, water, and shelter.
