One of the main reasons Europe was able to recover their empire was the new technologies they were developing from trading with other cultures. Europeans developed the compass and astrolabe from trading ideas with Asia, and they also developed more advanced seafaring ships. The black death started the emergence of a new class called the merchant class. The Bubonic Plague led to the emergence of this class by forcing people to move around. Once serfs left their land they were forced to do other jobs such as artisans, however most became freemen who gave their labor in exchange for payment.
