Colonists living in the seventeen-hundreds within North America often had very limited freedom of religion. In a dispute between Anne Hutchinson and John Winthrop, Winthrop in a trial judging whether Anne was guilty or not said, “[w]e must therefore put it away from you or restrain you from maintaining this course,” to which Anne responded with, “[i]f you have a rule for it from God’s word you may” (Voices of Freedom, 36).
