Elizabethan Womens Roles in The Play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet How did Elizabethans Women Roles take part in Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet? In the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet are of separate households that are in conflict with each other. The two young lovers who are destined to be together are not able to as they wish. There is an arranged marriage for Juliet that ends up killing both Juliet and Romeo. In that era, Elizabethan Womens roles affected events that could have changed. Elizabethan Womens Roles In the Elizabethan era, womens roles were very different then they are now. Women were viewed as inferior to men, and they grew up knowing that. Women were not allowed to go to school or go to University, instead only the noble and wealthy girls were tutored at home. Lower class Elizabethan women did not get any education except to learn housewifely duties. Elizabethan women could not be doctors or lawyers, instead to just be a housewife. After Lady Capulet tells Juliet about her marriage to paris and juliet defies her parents wishes, Lord Capulet becomes livid with her and exclaims “ I tell thee what- get thee to church a’ thursday, Or never after look at me in the face. Speak not, reply not, do not answer me!”(III.iiiii.162-164). Women especially younger girls did not have much control over their lives. If they ever were defiant of male members of their family they could be beaten, the men had rights to do that. Girls could also be completely disowned by their family,thrown out on the streets, and left for dead.
