“The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe, is a story of revenge, In the beginning of the story it never told what Fortunato did for Montresor to want to get revenge for. In fact, throughout the whole story, the reader begins to realize that Montresor is an unreliable narrator. Whatever the insult Montresor believes Fortunato has done, is probably imagined or over exaggerated. It was very certain that Fortunato does not have an idea why Montresor is angry. The fact why he doesn’t know why Montresor is angry makes the story even more tragic and frightening. Montresor was smile because he knew the revenge he was planning was becoming very successful. Within Montresor’s mind he has set traps for Fortunato. He gives him many opportunities to back out. Montresor was using reverse psychology to make Fortunato confused. In the story Fortunato wasn’t sure if he want to look for the Amontillado because he wasn’t feeling too good. Montresor said are you sure, but Fortunato insist on to find the Amontillado, readers knew that Fortunato shouldn’t have followed him to the catacombs because that will lead Fortunato to his death. Some readers thought Fortunato should have caught on to Montresor as he was becoming very strange like. Fortunato probably thinks that Montresor is being friendly because may he is used to Montresor looking like that. Many reader would believe that if one of their friends acted strange towards them that way.
