Writing poems is one of the most amazing talents that a person can have. “The Game” was one of the most entertaining poems that Judith Ortiz Cofer has written. Judith Cofer was born in a small town of Hormigueros, Puerto Rico, in 1952. She moved to the United States when she was four years old and arrived in Peterson, New Jersey, with her family in 1956. Because her father was serving in the US Navy, he was always away. Also, having a mother who regularly missed the island, they always made trips to Puerto Rico. Traveling to and from the island and having two cultures had become such an essential part of her writing of poetry and fiction. Judith Cofer is an educated woman; she completed her primary and secondary education in the United States, where she received her Bachelors Degree in English in Augusta, Georgia, and a Master’s degree in English at Florida Atlantic University. After she finished her schooling, she began to explore the life of becoming a writer. Later, she became a Professor at the University of Georgia in English and creative writing. The poem is written about a young girl named Cruz, who has disabilities with a sclerosis, I assume. Each stanza has different number of lines; for example, on the first stanza consists of six lines discussing about a girl. On second stanza consists of eight lines, describing Cruz disability. Third stanza is the longest, consists of ten lines, describing about narrator’s family towards Cruz. Fourth and fifth stanza has the same lengths, comprised of nine lines. First, we look at the stanzas. “The Game,” consists of five stanzas, which are the equivalent of a paragraph in an essay.
