My name is Tomas de Torquemada, and I was born during the Renaissance period. The Renaissance period was a time of rebirth of learning and arts. This cultural movement first began in Italy and later spread to England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and other countries in Europe during the 1400's and ended around the 1600s. During the Renaissance, Spain had a lot of great accomplishments. The unification of the Christian Kingdom came with the capturing of the last Islamic city Granada. Shortly following, Muslims and Jews were expelled which brought the Christian unification of Spain. In addition, Spanish explorers such as Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas and the western hemisphere. This was an important accomplishment for Spain as it expands its empire. The Renaissance also brought a time where many people were following the pope, and his thoughts. Later, people began questioning his theories and humanism began; the thought of thinking for oneself and being an individual. Petrarch was one of the first humanists and was an Italian poet and scholar. He stressed the value of classical learning and the teachings of Greece and Rome. Humanism helped revive the need for people to explore, experiment, and create and in wealthy cities in Italy. Renaissance artists also began using a new technique called perspective, producing a three dimensional painting instead of the old two dimensional style used in Medieval art. Many artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael created sculptures and paintings that will be famous forever. Not only did art flourish, but learning did as well.
