In the novel, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, there are numerous conflicts discovered. Since the novel takes place during the 1960s, there is a major conflict between the white and black people due to inequality, discrimination and injustice. In the novel, the person verse society conflict associates with Hilly and her rivalry towards the black people including Aibileen and Minny. Due to Hilly’s social status and wealth, she has the power to influence courts and companies to harm the black people which she targets without getting a spec of dirt on her hands. To the black people, this felony displays violence and injustice since they can only do little to fight back. Besides Hilly’s wealth, Hilly is the leader in her community’s league and she practically creates ideas and decisions to impact…show more content…
Without any scientific proof, Hilly creates these random facts and ignores the fact that she may hurt the feelings of others. Additionally, at the league meetings she disrespects the people and she spreads rumours about black individuals. Hilly spreads stereotypes and doesn’t treat black people with equality like she does to white people. She sets a demeaning attitude towards black people and doesn’t treat them with respect like she does with others. Although she provides food cans to the poor starving children of Africa, it is all an act so she doesn’t seem racist to her fellow league members. The novel states, “You cannot give these tribal people money, Mary Joline. […] And how would we know if they’re feeding their kids with it? They’re likely to go to the local voodoo tent and get a satanic tattoo with our money.” (204-205) Hilly assumes that black people are lazy and poor due to the fact that they don’t spend money
