Scoliosis, which literally means “bending or crooked” in Greek, is the medical condition in which the spine curves abnormally from side to side rather than curving straight down. There are a few different classifications of Scoliosis, which mainly include congenital, idiopathic, or secondary to a primary condition. Unknown causes of Scoliosis are classified as idiopathic and are the most commonly seen type. Although Idiopathic Scoliosis has no known cause, it is highly likely to be linked to genetics. About 65% of Scoliosis cases are found to be idiopathic. Research as recent as 2006 has shown us that there is a strong link between the CHD7 gene and Idiopathic Scoliosis.
