Thomas Eliot, one of the twentieth century's dominant poets, states: "Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things."(Eliot) Poetry is a beautiful apparatus which issues across messages and creates vivid sensations. Moving on, a notable poem I admire is "Dear Momma" by Tupac Shakur. This poem is significant since it was written by a legendary rapper who I personally look up to. Tupac Shakur was a rapper who had a hard journey to meet his dream; he serves more than four years in jail and still writes music. This inspired me to believe that nothing is impossible and everyone will have struggles, but it is our motivation that should lead us to success.…show more content…
Similarly, his poem, "Dear Momma", made me realize the importance of mother relationships and how much I sincerely love her. This poem is free verse since it does not follow a specific rhyme scheme. Tupac chants, "A poor single mutha on welfair, tell me how u did it There no way i could pay you back but that plan is to show u that I understand You are appreciated"(Shakur) This relates to the struggles mothers face when they have to raise their children; countless hours of tears, pain and hardship to raise their children into young men and woman. There is not enough money in this world that could replace or pay back my mother "cuz when i was low u was there for me, ya neva left me alont becuz ya cared 4 me"(Shakur). Moreover, the artist uses notable poetic devices such Asyndeton and Colloquialism to create a unique poem. Most poets use modern English and poetic structures that include stanzas, but this poem is continuous.
