The Book “To Kill a Mockingbird” is an appropriate book to teach at the tenth grade level. The book does say the “N-word” several times throughout the story, but it isn’t meant to offend anyone and is just showing how people used to talk when the story took place. There is no reason that the book should be banned from schools because the point of the book is to teach a moral lesson and nothing else. The book would be more appropriate if it was taught at the tenth grade level because of the maturity level of the students with the use of certain words, the understanding of different things, and the interest in the book could vary depending on age.
The book should be taught at the tenth grade level because of the maturity level of students. I know that all students aren’t all the same but students in High School are typically more mature than students that are in Middle School. Students in HIgh School also have a better understanding of when to speak certain words. Most Middle School students wouldn’t be mature about the use of the “N-word,” and it’s used several times throughout the story. Students in High School are more mature whenever they hear bad words. Middle School students could repeat the bad words and think that it is okay to say them since they are being said in a book that they are reading at school.
