“Mockingbird don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in our corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (Lee 90) To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is about a little girl who lives in a the 1930’s and what she experiences. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee shares important themes with the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Some of these themes is racism, gender treatment and stereotyping. All three of these themes are still relevant today. One common theme found in both novels is racism. In the 1930’s, racism was everywhere because the Civil Rights Movement did not happen yet. This theme can be seen in To Kill a Mockingbird in chapter 12 when Calpurnia took both Jem and Scout to her church and a black lady named Lula told Calpurnia that she could not bring them into a black church because they were white (Lee 119).This is racism because Lula told them they could not go to their church because they were white. This theme can be seen in Of Mice and Men in chapter 2 when Crooks explained that the boss told him he could not go to the cabin/house because he was black (Steinbeck 20). This theme can be seen in To Kill a Mocking in chapter 2 when they first met Miss Caroline Fisher the children muttered because she was from Winston County. (Lee 16) Since Miss Caroline was from Winster count, the students did not like her because of where she use to live. This theme can be seen in Of Mice and Men in chapter 3 when George did not want people to know that a lady accused Lenny of rape even though he only touched her dress (Steinbeck 41). If people knew about Lenny, they would have judged him and they might not of gotten that job working at the ranch. Stereotyping isn’t the only theme in today
