Call it Courage is the story of a sea-fearing boy named Mafatu and his journey to find courage. Mafatu was outcasted from his tribe for his fear of the sea because all of his village and tribe worshiped courage. To make it worse his name meant "stout heart" and his dad was the leader of their tribe. Mafatu's fear developed when an a sea storm claimed his mothers life. After countless years of being taunted and derided by his village members, Mafatu decides that he has had enough. He packs a small canoe with a spear, knife, and string of drinking nuts and heads out to sea with his dog. Mafatu's plan is to ride the currents south to another island where he can survive for a few weeks then return to his home to see everyone's proud faces. Although it sounds like a fairly simple plan Mafatu experiences many hardships in the book. On his way to the island Mafatu's small Canoe drifts into a Seastorm like the one that took his mom's life. He manages to survive it, but all of his supplies are lost in the water. Only Mafatu his dog and the canoe are left after the storm. Not even his strip of clothes are left. The water was calm and the sky was blue with no storm insight. After a few long days of travel Mafatu reaches his homeland safely. The villagers and people of the tribe all are gathered around on the beach to greet the incoming canoe. Once they see it as Moffet to every one cheers. Even his father that had refused talk to him earlier was proud of his brave boy. They saw all of the items that proved his courage: the boar tusks, a spear, dried octopus tentacles from an octopus he slayed, etc. But Mafatu he's only live for a short while once he reaches his home island. He falls into his father's arms dead. But years later they still told the story of Mafatu "stout
