“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” Animal captivity is a controversial issue that attracts heated debate from those advocating and opposing the argument. Those who oppose animal captivity believe that it is an inhumane and barbaric act while advocates believe that it is a remedy for animals in need. The latter group of people regard captivity as a beneficial factor to animals who cannot independently survive in the wild. The opposers of animal captivity hold a strong belief that all animals held in confinement are subjected to cruel treatment brought upon by their caretakers. According to Blackfish, a documentary that unveils the evil and torment brought upon orcas held in captivity at Sea World, animals who generally travel long distances in the wild, such as orcas, are blatantly restricted by their enclosures when they are held in captivity. Though the confinement of wild animals in zoos and amusement parks may seem inhumane and barbaric, there are several establishments who dedicate their resources to shelter and nurture animals in need. For instance, a vulture with a broken wing would not be able to scout for food and would needlessly die from starvation in the wild. Zoological organizations such as Micke Grove Zoo, would take in injured animals, such as the vulture, and shelter it in one of its many enclosures. The enclosures at this organization are not at all similar to those at amusement parks or zoos, in which have been sponsored by multibillion dollar corporations, these have been meticulously designed to replicate the animal’s natural habitat.
