Key Passage Analysis This passage of the book is the very beginning of the novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. The entire book is introduced in this one passage, and this introduction says a lot about the book already. The entire story is written in a series of letters written by Charlie who serves as the narrator of the book. This passage tells a lot about the main character, Charlie, already. As evident from the passage, you can tell that he is grateful for the little things he has but he is a little self-conscious. He knows how easy it is to lose something so when he doesn’t he shows gratitude toward now losing it. You can tell because of this quote, “I just need to know that someone out there listens and understands and doesn’t try to sleep with people even if they could have.” He likes the idea of someone being sympathetic and empathetic toward him, because it clearly doesn’t happen very often. It is…show more content… Charlie was sexually assaulted by his beloved aunt. At first he thought it was just a dream but it was later discovered that it had actually happened a long time ago. The fact that this happened reveals a lot about Charlie as a character. He concealed all of the abuse because he loved her and was empathetic toward her because she, too, was molested by a friend of the family and her parents didn’t believe this. This was traumatizing for her and it continued to happen until she finally got away. Charlie is the kind of person who attaches and loves a person very easily. The line, “But I kind of figured out that everything I dreamt about my aunt Helen was true” really shows how Charlie grew as a character as well. Early on, Charlie couldn’t really comprehend the idea that his aunt had done this to him. However, throughout the novel he became more aware of what was happening and developed more social skills that he was able to understand that his own aunt actually sexually assaulted
