Selena was widely known in the Spanish-language part of the music industry, but she became known in the U.S. in 1993 when Texas Monthly names her one of the twenty most influential Texans and she was interviewed by Los Angeles Times. Later that year, she won a Grammy for Best Mexican-American album. In 1994, she and her band became the first Tejano group to make it on Billboard’s Latin Top 200 list of best-selling records of all time (Orozco). Selena thought it was very important to finish high school, so she always made time to speak to teens and kids to try to motivate them to stay in school. In the same year of her death, she was inducted into the Latin Music Hall of Fame. Dreaming of You, an unfinished album by Selena released months after her death, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and stayed on the chart for 49 weeks. It sold 175,000 copies on the first day, which was a record for a female pop singer. The album also debuted at number one on the Latin Albums chart and the Latin Pop Albums chart, both in the United States, and stayed on the charts for 128 and 104 weeks. This album helped Selena become the second-fastest selling album, the first being Janet Jackson. She was also the first female recording artist to put five simultaneous albums on the Billboard 200 chart. Her album was listed on the “Best Selling Records of 1995”. After the release of the album, singles off of the album, “I Could Fall in Love” and “Dreaming of You” topped the charts and were played on radio stations all over the United States. Billboard named Selena “Best Selling Artist of the Decade” and “Top Latin Artist of the 90’s”. By 1996, she held the record for most wins at the Latin Music Awards. The Guinness Book of World Records named Selena the “Most Dominating Artist”.
