The Maze Runner by James Dashner In the The Maze Runner, the setting is introduced as The Glade where a large group of boys with no memory of their past lives have emerged through an elevator shaft. The Glade is surrounded by a maze composed of concrete walls, and there are runners that have been chosen to find an escape route out of the place they have been confined. The protagonist in the story is Thomas, who arrives in The Glade and is almost immediately assigned the position of a runner. Theresa appears a day after Thomas and the boys are shocked to see that a girl has joined them. In her hand is a note that states that she is the last person to ever enter The Glade. In the beginning of the novel, Thomas explores The Glade and the author reflects on what he thinks by saying “…he realized more and more how well the Gladers kept up the place, how clean it was. He was impressed by how organized they must be, how hard they all must work. He could only imagine how truly horrific a place like this could be if everyone went lazy and stupid,” (Dashner 65). This shows that Thomas thinks that order is keeping all of the Gladers sane and helping them survive. When Thomas wonders how The Glade would be without order, stating that it would be horrible, it shows that there would be anarchy without the system that the boys used. The boys are also assigned jobs based on what they were able to accomplish. According to Zart, Keeper of the Gardens, “…‘you got the Builders, the Sloppers, Baggers, Cooks, Map-makers, Med-jacks, Track-Hoes, Blood Housers. The Runners, of course’” (Dashner 104). The jobs are important because they provide a structure and create an organized society. Later on in the book, Newt emphasizes the importance of order, saying, "’that’s not how it works around here, and our whole existence depends on things working… Order. You say that bloody word over and over in your shuck head. Reason we're all sane around here is 'cause we work our butts off and maintain order,’” (Dashner 101-102). Newt indicates that the
