The Argument from Evil analyzes propositions that lead to the conclusion that God cannot exist concurrently with evil. The argument evaluates the issue that if evil exists in the world, then God must not be both omnibenevolent and omnipotent. Although, the Argument from Evil vividly underscores the conspicuous evil in the world, it fails to prove that God cannot exist entirely due to evil’s presence. Mackie’s Argument from Evil is persuasive mainly because it is easy to believe that evil exists in the world, which leads to the standpoint that God is incompatible with evil due to his omnibenevolence. The evil portion of the argument highlights the negative features of the world to prove God’s inexistence which is primarily considered atheism. The basic idea of the argument concerns three propositions: God is all powerful, God is all good, and the world contains evil. However, according to the argument the three propositions are inconsistent, i.e. they cannot all can be true. In other words, if any two of the three prove to be true, then the third must be false. For instance, if the world contains evil, the Argument from Evil declares that there cannot be a traditional theist God who is both omnibenevolent and omnipotent (Lecture). It discusses how it leaves room for personal achievements. No one would have anything to overcome if the world weren’t presented with bad; therefore, would people be able to better who they are? Goodness cannot be obtained by those who have no experience. Another response to the argument is to deny that evil is a positive thing that God would have to have created. Evil is sometimes said to be only a privation which means it’s merely the absence of good. For example, evil is to good as cold is to warmth.
