There is a wide variety of things that can be associated with autism. There are many early signs that may indicate if a person has autism. There are also a number of symptoms that are signs of autism as well. We can look at and try all the signs, symptoms, and treatments we want to help children with autism, but we need to remember that having caring and supportive people in every area of their life matters. One early sign of autism in a young child is that they may not respond to things such as their name. A child may not show interest in objects or may not show interest in the typical pretend games that we tend to play with children. A child may have difficulty understanding others feelings without the help of others, they may have unusual reactions to the normal senses that a person without autism has, and are prone to get upset by minor changes. Developmental screening is a more official way of determining autism in a child. Developmental screening happens in a young child to determine whether a child develops at the normal rate it is supposed to. Developmental screening involves a short test which determines if young children are learning the basic skills within the appropriate time period. Developmental screening involves your child’s doctor who can either ask parents questions about their child or talk and play with the child to see how the child is learning, speaking, behaving, and moving. Children will obtain developmental screening for delays or disabilities during your routine well child checkup appointments, which are at 9 months, 18 months, and 24 or 30 months of age. Additional screening may occur if a child is known to be at a high risk for having developmental issues due to being born premature, having a low birth weight, and other reasons as well.
