This report will discuss the care required for a patient with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is one of the common causes of dementia, it is a disease that causes symptoms such as memory loss and interferes with a person’s intellectual abilities, making it very difficult to perform simple daily tasks. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease, the symptoms are not as noticeable at the beginning but get a lot worse as time goes on. (1) Out of the 5.4 million people in America living with Alzheimer's, it is estimated that 5.2 million people are aged 65 and older, and about 200,000 people are under the age of 65 (this would be known as younger-onset Alzheimer's). Other parts of holistic nursing are also religious or spiritual beliefs if the patient has any it is important to ask them and let them know they can avail of these services if needed.(5) When dealing with an Alzheimer’s patient it is important for their holistic care needs to take these few things into consideration. Such as the environment, for a person with Alzheimer’s things in their environment can have a negative effect on their attitude and can make them upset so it is important to be aware of these triggers and if possible change them. It is important not to make a person with Alzheimer’s more anxious than they already are. Things such as lighting in a room, noise and also where things such as furniture are placed can have a big difference.
