Rosalind Hawkins and Jason Cameron are the two main characters of the novel. As the novel progresses, the two grow in many different ways. These growths, although not immediately apparent, continue to connect the two characters throughout the novel. Rosalind comes to respect Jason from her first talk with her employer. She comes to love him soon after, even before she meets him face to face. She grows in knowledge (in many forms) soon after her arrival and from afar, Jason encourages and even plans it. This growth, although one could consider it preempted by manipulation and lies, prepares Rosalind for meeting Jason after only hearing his voice for so long.
