The Gettysburg Address is one of the most famous speeches in America. Written to inspire and motivate troops, President Abraham Lincoln delivered this speech in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1863. During this time, the Cold War was in progress, troops on both sides were dying, making the atmosphere tense and depressing. Inspiring soldiers by assuring them how great of a nation America is boosted morale immediately. By using a passionate tone throughout the speech, the President uplifted every American soul present that day.
