Article Critique #1: Temper, Temperature, and Temptation: Heat-Related Retaliation in Baseball Jadia Lampton University of North Texas Temper, Temperature, and Temptation: Heat-Related Retaliation in Baseball Summary The purpose of Larrick, Timmerman, Carton, and Abrevaya’s (2011) article “Temper, Temperature, and Temptation: Heat-Related Retaliation in Baseball” was to see if high temperatures played a role or had a relationship in the percentage of batters being hit by a ball thrown by the pitcher. The authors hypothesized that if the temperature was high enough then this would cause the pitchers to retaliate to their players getting hit more. The results in this study suggested that there was in fact a relationship between temperature and temper/retaliation rate. It shows that the relationship between the two were that high and also low temperatures caused the pitches to retaliate more if one of their players were hit by the other teams pitcher. The sample size was very wide spread, they had about 57,000 to 111,048 MLB games. This is good because the larger the sampling size, the more stable or accurate your information will be. The information tables gave a lot of valid insight into their working process. This is good because it shows all their calculations or statistical values that they had to found in order for them to be able to come up with the conclusion or results that they did.
